Fandom Radio, Tuesday, January 8th

Another semester, another stack of notes. Another stack of notes, another list of names that I don't know. At least the squirrels brought me coffee this time. They're learning, I think.

Hello, residents of the island new and old. This is Jonothon Starsmore, your Tuesday morning radio newsman. Or, rather, 'news' man. Today's news will almost certainly consist at least substantially of how teachers had students introduce themselves in class. Here, I'll prove it to you.

At the School, the first day of classes was kicked off with Jaye's Philosophy class. For those not in the know, they don't really cover much philosophy, unless you care to wax philosophical about such cinematic greats as that one where the giant python faces off against the giant shark. This week they started with something a little less Mega-shark and watched meta for When Harry Met Sally. Easing them into your theatrical tastes this semester, Jaye?

Lady Ghanima started her Feminism class with some background on herself, and a lecture on how there's never actually been one singular feminist movement. Students participated in the traditional round of introductions, and then Ghanima pulled Maeby aside to draft her into a position as TA for the semester. Last class of the day was Jaina's Flight class, in which actual flying was put on hold in favour of - you guessed it - more introductions. Students listened to the lecture or used is as an opportunity to complain that they weren't going to be flapping their arms to achieve lift, and then shared a bit of their flying background with the class.

The books were actually behaving themselves for William's library shift when the new librarian, John Constantine, stopped in asked what he was supposed to do with the place, assured William that he had a specialised sort of skill-set for dealing with Special Collections, and then headed off to his office for tea. Interesting bloke.

Moving along, now, to the notes about the Dorms, in which we get our first bout of animal transformation news for the semester when a puppy turns into Zhari at the foot of Sparkle's bed, earning a bit of a panic reaction. Ulrik threw a blanket on her before she made the traditional 'first panicked run down the hallway undressed' break for her room. Fortunately, the hallways were fairly empty so late in the evening. In the second floor common room, Gert was channel surfing and eating a burger, while Old Lace - who I'm assuming is a pet of some sort - went hungry. Jim stopped in and got to hear about three months that Gert went without the internet, and don't get me started on people's dependency on the internet these days, and then had to assure Gert that he wasn't preppy.

Fandom is a prep school? I wish somebody had sent me that memo.

Last, we have notes about the goings-on in Town, where Clint kicked off his birthday with a nightmare, and then dog therapy afterwards. Kitty stopped by with birthday greetings, and then made him make a wish on the cupcake that she'd brought for him. Seems like a decent way to spend the waking hours of a birthday, I think.

Cade was somewhat less approachable than usual at Stark Industries. Alice was reading a book on weapons at the Wellspring Arms. And, at the Devil's Nest, Jack Priest was hard at work repairing a soda gun when April solicited his help picking out her college courses. Josh and Jack talked about how Josh didn't know that particular bar from when he was on the island before, and Jack wasn't familiar with the presidents that Josh worked for, so it all balances out. At the Magic Box, Surreal was on shift, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and eager to help any new customers that-- No, I can't even finish that note with a straight face. Really, now.

Out on the beach, Jack Frost - seriously? - was playing in the water when Yeul recognized him as one of the new students. They made their introductions and talked about how his name really should give him a pass when it comes to blame for the weather, and then they headed into town to get hot drinks. Emily was playing in the water herself, though the squirrels have their doubts that her name gets her a pass on things like, say, frostbite or hypothermia, which Jack no doubt helped along by making it snow on her. Liara's mother had told her about the spirit of winter before, so she knew him when she saw him, and they talked for awhile about how he did what he did. And then Jack and Bobby Drake had themselves a conversation rife with puns about things that people complain about in the summertime, and really, I'm sure that's all they discussed.

At Café Luke's, Priestly was struggling for cooking inspiration, while at Café Fina, Porthos and his new clothes seemed to have inspiration to spare with a song and dance number encouraged by the dishes. Bobby, along with a large number of pastries and some coffee, were waiting at the Perk for Warren, who speculated about the uprising of the pastry army before they started talking about school, and then a bit of big news that Bobby's been looking forward to sharing with Warren for some time, if the way Karla went on at Bobby afterward about how he owes her for keeping the secret is any indication. And then, at Caritas, Guy was doing an impressive job refraining from actually taking any tape to the zombie band. It's a nasty job, Guy, but somebody has to do it.

And that's that for my notes today. Stay tuned for the rest of the week for more news on people telling people what their name is. There's bound to be a lot of that. And possibly even an alot of that, though I'm not certain what the alot of introductions would even look like. And, on that note, I'm going to leave you all until next week. This is Jonothon Starsmore, signing off. Good day, Fandom.
